Local Chilliwack golfers perform well at the 2012 Canaccord Wealth Management Chilliwack Open

The 2012 Canaccord Wealth Management Chilliwack Open has come to a successful conclusion after two perfect days at the beautiful Chilliwack Golf & Country Club, located in Chilliwack, BC. Congratulations are in order to all 216 tournament participants, volunteers and the staff at Chilliwack Golf Club for being a part of what was repeatedly noted as “the best Chilliwack Open in the 50+ year history of the tournament.”

The golf course stood up, and then some, to the very strong field of both amateur and professionals golfers from the province of B.C. and beyond with the winning score coming in at a respectable 4 under par (168). The weather could not have been any better providing firm and fast conditions from tee through green and some gnarly conditions in the rough for those golfers unable to hit the middle of the fairway. The grand stands viewing area and beer garden/bbq located on the tricky 15th hole green proved to be a big hit with the tournament participants as well as spectators who game out to watch golfers navigate the risk-reward par 4 hole.

Coldstream B.C.’s Tyler Pitt’s managed to capture his first professional career victory and $2,000, as he finished four under par (138) over the two days while local amateur Colin Gilliam finished at four over par (146).

Chilliwack Golf Club’s own, Nigel Sinnott, finished one stroke off the lead in the professional division, capturing his biggest pay check ($1,200) of his short pro career. Other Chilliwack notables include Jared Rempel finishing at two over par, Brad Clapp three over par and Danny Hebert at seven over par.

When asked how it feels to perform so well in front of his home course fans, friends and family, Sinnott said “it was truly the biggest highlight of his golf career and that he really enjoyed the crowds who came out to support him, especially on the 15th hole.” He also added “the 15th hole motivated me to go for the green from the tee, normally I wouldn’t have done that” – Sinnott managed to put himself within 12 feet of the pin and just left the eagle putt on the side of the cup.

Chilliwack Golf Club General Manager, Bryan Ewart, was impressed with the high calibre of golf displayed by both the professionals and amateurs. “The golf course could not have been in better condition and the large crowds throughout the golf course and especially on the 15th hole, made this a tournament to remember,” said Ewart. Ewart also added that he was very proud of Nigel Sinnott, who also works as a bartender for the golf club, “Nigel was working late into the night prepping in the restaurant on Friday night, shooting lights out golf on Saturday morning, pouring drinks behind the bar on Saturday evening and coming so close to winning the tournament on Sunday, not a bad weekend for the 22 year old kid!”

The Chilliwack Open partnered with Canaccord Wealth Management and Abbotsford Branch Manager, Mike Pratt and his team to make this year’s tournament the overall success it was. Without the support of Canaccord Wealth Management tournaments such as the Chilliwack Open would not be possible to the high levels achieved this weekend.

The Vancouver Golf Tour provided the live leader boards located in various locations over the 18 holes, course marshalling and a top professional field. Fraser Mulholland, Vancouver Golf Tour director, was quoted as saying “the staff and management have set a new bar for future VGT events here in the Lower mainland, congratulations to Chilliwack Golf Club.”
