Tournament in Review
Twenty-five year old Sun Rivers Pro Brad Clapp fired an impressive round of 65 (-8) at this Friday’s PIN HIGH Tour Championship at the Q GOLF CLUB to capture his first win on the VGT. Clapp made a total of 9 birdies on the day, including 5 consecutive on 9 thru 14 to win by one shot over Can Tour veteran Matt Daniel. With his win (and $1,400 cheque), Clapp proved to himself (and all of the Vancouver Golf Tour) that his second place finish to Canada’s #1 Adam Hadwin at the Vancouver Open was no fluke!
Clapp has had quite a run of late after his 2nd place finish at the Van Open, teaming up with Chilliwack Golf Club Pro Jared Rempel to win the PGA of BC Pro-Pro Championship at Nicklaus North just two weeks ago. Having made the journey from Kamloops four times in 2011, Clapp has made some headway this year on the VGT, with a win, a 2nd and a 3rd place finish.
Clapp expressed his appreciation on a few accounts at the awards presentation. “I’d like to thank Fraser and his team on the VGT for putting on such professionally run events. It’s a great opportunity to play against such strong fields down in the Vancouver area on the VGT. It is like a mini Canadian Tour event every time they tee-it-up there are so many great players in this region. I’m grateful for Pin High’s support of this event as well as for some of VGT’s Major sponsors in the room, Brad Garside of Paine Edmonds Lawyers and Steve Savage of Nickel Heating”. Clapp finally paid tribute to the Q GOLF CLUB on all accounts – “Thanks to the Q Club members for providing the golf course to the VGT for the day and to the maintenance staff for the phenomenal conditions of the golf course”!
All of the players in the VGT Tour Championship were treated to a beautiful chicken and salmon buffet dinner, followed with a cheese cake that was to die for! Special thanks to Q Golf Clubhouse Manager Tony Di Giovanni and his clubhouse staff for a wonderful meal.
In the Championship Amateur Division, it was one of Canada’s top young players, 17 year old Adam Svensson who blew the field away with a super score of 67 (-6), eight shots over his next competitor. Svensson was paired with one of VGT’s top Professionals Ryan Williams, had a great opportunity to measure himself up against Ryan and all of the VGT Pros on the day – which he did quite well I might add! After having a “mediocre year” in his mind due to a wrist injury in the spring, Svensson capped off his year nicely with this win as well as his Low Amateur honours at the Vancouver Open a month ago. Svensson will finish off his last year at high school this year before heading down to UNLV on a full golf scholarship next fall! We wish Adam all the best in his last year as a junior golfer and in the future, what should be a very successful Amateur, College and Professional golf career!
The Tour Championship featured both an Individual Stroke play event for the Pros and Amateurs as well as a Pro-am Team event where the two best net scores out of the four golfers counted on each hole. At the end of the day, all Amateur winners in each flight were treated to some fabulous prizes including some premier CLEVELAND & SRIXON golf product.
Amateur Flight and Team Winners:
Championship Amateur: Adam Svensson – Gross score of 67 (-6)
Flight A Amateur: Dale Holtz – Net 68 (-5)
Flight B Amateur: Bryan Leonhardt – Net 65 (-8)
Pro-am Team Winners: Pro Brad Clapp, Amateurs Jesse Singh, Dale Holtz, David Wilcox – Two Best Net Score of 123 (-23)
