TOURNAMENT REVIEW
Twenty-five year old Matt Lister did what he has been aspiring to do for quite some time on the links – WIN a golf tournament. After a luke-warm front nine of 4-over par, Lister chased down birdies on holes 12, 15 & 18 for a 3-under par 33 on his back nine for a winning score of 73 on a stretched out Northview Ridge course that featured Sunday Air Canada Championship Pins. Lister topped 19 year old David Cao of Richmond Country Club and Hein Marcus of Vancouver by one shot for his first win of any type in golf. “Its kind of just sinking in now” Lister commented at the trophy presentation. “I’ve been working hard on all components of my game the past few years, and its great to see it finally come through in a win today”. “I honestly came in really happy (after my 3-under back nine) thinking Well, I’m definitely in the prizes today, but didn’t think the score would hold up with the size and calibre of field today”. “But I guess the length of the course and pin positions proved quite difficult for all players, so its awesome to see my score hang in there for my first victory in golf. It feels great”.

A member of the Q-Club (formerly Quilchena Golf Club) since he was a junior golfer, Lister has been competing in golf tournaments from a young age. He’s a relative newcomer to the VGT, finishing a respectable 15th place on the Cleveland/Srixon Order of Merit in the Championship Amateur Flight last year. Recording two top 10 finishes (5th and 6th place) in 2010 obviously gave him a bit more confidence to compete, and after his win at Northview we might just see this 25-year old golfer take this confidence to the winners’ circle again before the year is over. Matt has recently taken a position as Marketing Co-ordinator of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, so it looks like all the work he’s putting back into Junior Golf is paying off in the end! Congratulations on your first win Matt and here’s to many more in the future!
Flight A action saw a new VGT Member Tim Ferris take the Flight A Gross Title with five birdies en route to a score of 77, and a one shot victory over the ever-steady Jim Zalusky. Ferris’ victory earned him 1,500 points on the Cleveland/Srixon Order of Merit and a brand new Cleveland Launcher XL270 Driver. Tyler Smith earned Low Net Honours with a net score of 70 and picked up a sweet Cleveland Mashie Hybrid and a VGT Pullover.
Thru five events, James Peters leads the Flight A OOM with 3,390 pts over 2nd place Jefferey Lindemulder and 3rd place Masa Takahashi.
In Flight B, James Commerford carded a score of 80 to take home the medal for Low Gross Honors and a one shot victory over Shane Jung, last week’s Flight B Gross Winner. Commerford’s prizing included a Cleveland Launcher 3-Metal & a VGT Jacket while Low Net Winner Jung won a Cleveland Carry Bag & a VGT Pullover.
Thru five events in Flight B, Shane Jung holds onto a slim 300 point margin over Peter Fung and just over 1000 points over 3rd place Robert Parihar.
