2UNDR Amateur Spring Championship
Meadow Gardens Golf Club
May 23-24, 2020
AIZAWA’S WIN MAKES IT A PAIR OF 2UNDR SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES
What a weekend for Championship Golf out at the Meadow Gardens Golf Club! The 2UNDR Amateur Spring Championship was VGT’s 6th event on the 2020 calendar and 6th event at full capacity with 88 players in the field that included over 40 Male and Female Championship Flight Golfers (5.0 & under). Our thanks go out to this year’s Spring Championship host club, Meadow Gardens Golf Club for being such great hosts throughout the weekend and presenting the course in immaculate shape for our players. And it goes without saying that we need to thank all the timers, spotters, rules officials and other volunteers for the long hours that were put in to make this year’s Championship a complete success.
DAY ONE – BELL HITS PERSONAL BEST ON SLICK GREENS!!
Day one on Saturday saw a number of good scores from players in all flights. In particular it was Flight A’s Kody Bell of Fort Langley Golf Course who shined brightly, shooting a personal best 74 (+2) on day 1 to lead his division by 5 shots over Eric Li.
Richmond Country Club’s Mike Aizawa and Crowne Isle’s Victor Choi shared top spot on the Champ side with matching scores of 71 (-1) on a day that saw some extremely challenging pin locations and greens running 11 on the stimp. Aizawa and Choi both had stellar back nines of 34 (-2) to jump into a one shot lead heading into the final round.
In Flight B, Scott Heke shot 82 (+10) on day one to hold a 3 shot advantage over Loomis Trail’s Ron Kenny and Northview Golf and Country Clubs’s Bryce Kilpatrick.
For the Womens divisions we had some steller play from Beach Grove’s Angela Arora and Erin lee who both fired rounds of 75 (+3) to share the lead of the Women’s Championship flight after day one. Richmond Country Club’s Candice Chan and Point Grey Golf and Country Club’s Connie Hang led day 1 with Net 85’s (+13) in A/B Flight.
DAY TWO – AIZAWA’S NEAR FLAWLESS DAY
Day two seemed to be more difficult with some tougher pins and some quick greens. Scott Heke maintained his lead to finish first in B Flight with scores of 82,86 (+24). Jeevan Tiwana made a strong push on day two with an 83 (+11) but the bogey on the last hole left him one shot back and in a solo 2nd finish in the B Flight.
Kody Bell and Eric Li were neck and neck down the back nine after a few tough holes after the turn. Fortunately Bell separated himself down the stretch with a birdie on 13 to Li’s bogey, and that was the edge he needed to coast home and take the victory in A Flight.
Mike Aizawa played some REALLY steady golf on Sunday, hitting 17 out of 18 greens (+ one fringe) on route to a 7 shot win over Jackson Jacob. Firing a bogey-free final round 70 (-2) and finishing at -3 for the two days, Aizawa was the only player in the field under par thru 36-holes. Northview Golf and Country Club’s Jackson Jacob had a really solid day two with a round of 71 (-1), which crept him all the way up into 2nd place solo for the event.
In the Women’s Division, Beach Grove’s Angela Arora opened up a 5 shot lead going into the back nine over Erin Lee. Firing the lowest score of the Women Division on day 2 with score of 73 (+1), Arora won the Women’s Championship flight by 6 strokes and her first VGT win! Well done Angela!
Richmond Country Club’s Candice Chan played much better on day 2, firing a Gross Score of 83 (Net 76) and 9 shots better than day one to edge out Connie Hang by 2 shots.
Once again we want to Congratulate all our winners on their Victories. We hope to see you all out at the next event on June 2nd at Cultus Lake!
