2014 SONIC TRANSPORT OPEN
Northview Golf Club – Ridge Course
Sunday, April 27th
With over 100 golfers in the field and the Northview Ridge Golf Course set-up to test our players to the fullest, four VGT Championship Amateurs would battle the firm and fast greens better than everyone else and stand atop the leader board at even par 72 at completion of play. Meaning this championship would require extra holes to decide the 2014 Sonic Transport Open winner!
Unfortunately one of these players to make the sudden death playoff (Chris Moore) would not be able to compete in the playoff due to work commitments. Which meant that 3 others (Mark Heinrich, Joey Lemieux and Colin Gilliam) would do battle in a sudden death playoff to decide the winner.
All 3 players piped drives on the 1st playoff hole, but after their iron shots hit the green, Gilliam was the only one to capitalize on his approach to the pin with a birdie, and he would ultimately be crowned the Sonic Transport Open winner! This is Gilliam’s 2nd win as an amateur on the VGT. His last win came at the 2012 Sandpiper Classic. He had a successful year in 2012, coming 3rd in the year-long Order of Merit title before an injury set him back in 2013 and he could only play 2 events. It’s great to see him back in full health and in full form this year!
Gilliam picked up a BUSHNELL Z6 JOLT Rangefinder for the victory over one of VGT’s largest field of 48 Championship Golfers (+3 to 5.0).
Flight A Division was captured by one of VGT’s longest standing Amateur members Michael Bleackley, who fired a gross score of 79 in the toughly contested ACC layout. More impressive was Bleackley’s back-nine score of 34 (-2) which secured him in the event of a count back. Which did happen when he tied another regular of the VGT, Tyler Smith, who also shot 79. Bleackely’s 34 tied a personal best 9-hole score and for that, he was awarded a BUSHNELL TOUR V3 Rangefinder! Smith won a cool NIKE waterproof ¼ Zip jacket for placing 1st in the Overall Net category with a net score of 67.
The Flight B Championship was taken this week by new VGT member Kevin McKee, who carded a gross 85 to win over a number of players who recorded gross scores of 86. This was McKee’s first victory on the VGT and he also collected a BUSHNELL TOUR V3 Rangefinder for the win! Peter Jones was our Overall Net winner at 72 (E) and won himself a CLEVELAND GOLF 588 fairway wood for his solid play!
Our continued thanks goes out to our Title Sponsor of the Northview event for the 2nd straight year, LES CALDER of SONIC TRANSPORT! Les, you are a first class guy who believes in what we are doing with the VGT and we can’t thank you enough for all of your support with growing the VGT into something very special. It is certainly not a wonder why your event has sold out the past 2 years with over 100 golfers and why your company SONIC TRANSPORT is as successful as it is today. Allowing us to keep the event fee very affordable for a premier facility like Northview and making the prize table as premier as it was the past couple of years is very special. Thanks for all you do for promoting golf in BC! It really is making a difference in the development of our golfers!
Special thanks to Northview Golf & Country Club for being great hosts to the VGT once again! Great service from your pro-shop team and service center and we couldn’t have asked for a better golf course set-up for our championship! Thanks Dave Fehr and your team for stepping it up for the Tour! And finally, thanks to the continued efforts and hours being poured into another great event by the VGT Team! Couldn’t have a better group of people to work with in executing our events from week-to-week!!
