2011 CANADA BREAD BC MATCH PLAY
Round of 16 Match Results & Quarter-Final Pairings
After some great finishes to some of the Round of 16 matches at the BC Match Play Pairs, eight teams remain to battle it out for the 2011 title. Still remaining in the field are ’10 Champions Dave Zibrik/ Kevin Hogg, who battled down to the final hole before knocking off the pairing of Bryon Thom/Taylor Wallner on the 19th hole. Zibrik/Hogg will square off against the youthful swing of 18 year old Brian Jung and his partner Min Gu Kang who took 18 holes to defeat the Chilliwack duo of Kerry Grittner and Mike Broadfoot.
Dave Zibrik/Kevin Hogg vs. Bryon Thom/Taylor Wallner
Defending champions Dave Zibrik and Kevin Hogg battled Brian Thom and Taylor Waller in a close contest through 19 holes before finally capturing the match.
Dave’s birdie on the first extra hole was the decider. It was only Dave’s second birdie of the day, but it came at just the right time.
Dave and Kevin were 1 down after nine holes but had built a 2 up lead by the 14th hole with some deft putting by Kevin.
As the rain began to fall Brian and Taylor fought back to square the match with timely birdie putts on 15 and 17.
After Dave barely missed chipping in from the rough for a birdie and the win, the 18th was halved forcing an extra hole in heavy rain to decide the match.
Brian Jung/Min Gu Kang vs. Kerry Grittner/Mike Broadfoot
The consistent play of Brian Jung and Min Gu Kang eventually won out over the pair of Kerry Grittner and Mike Broadfoot.
Brian and Min Gu rarely missed fairways or greens in regulation.
Both sides had numerous opportunities for birdies but the putts just wouldn’t drop.
The match was close throughout with only 6 holes won by either side and the rest halved.
After Kerry’s ball was lost in the water drenched rough on 18th hole, Mike made a valiant birdie but the hole was halved by Brian sealing their fate.
The deciding shot of the match was a 40′ pitch from the fringe by Min Gu on the par 5 17th hole rolling just 2″ from the cup, leading to a conceded tap-in birdie for a 1 up lead and dormie position heading to the 18th tee.
Other quarter-finals matches at Kings Links this Saturday April 9th consist of 3-year pairing of Sergej Dronov/Patrick Ericson versus Veteran Can Tour player Matt Daniel and Amateur Paul Penman. In round of 16 matches at Pitt Meadows Dronov/Ericson played some steady golf, knocking off their opponents Bryan Phelan/Trevor Woynarski 4 & 3. It took some exceptional play on the back 9 from Daniel & Penman to come from 3 down after 9 to Bisson/Dunaway to win on the final hole with Daniel closing out the match with an up and down birdie from the sand.
In the other round of 16 match at Pitt Meadows, Pros Josh Taylor & Kevin Stinson continued their strong play, knocking off Eaglequest Coquitlam Pros Chris Lutes and Mike Hobson 4&2. Brothers Matt & Corey Steger (Seymour GC) took their match right to the final hole in order to defeat Chilliwack Golf & CC Pros Jarad Rempel and Danny Hebert. Taylor/Stinson will battle Steger/Steger at Kings Links this Saturday April 9th to see who reaches the semis at Capilano the following day.
In the final round of 16 matches, Gaylen Johston and Chris Gerella took a handy lead in their match versus Peter Stewart and Caine Lacusta before some serious putting on the back 9 by Stewart took this match to extra holes. Johnston/Gerella prevailed on the 19th hole with a birdie to win the match. They will go head-to-head in the quarters against the duo from University Golf Club (18 year old Brendan Southwind and Professional partner Aaron Dimich) who took former champs Dan Swanson & Rich Kellington down on the 18th hole for a 1 up victory. This match at Richmond Country Club was a see-saw battle all day, with the final hole being decided over a two eagle putts. The first by Swanson from 25 feet, that just slid by the hole and the second by Dimich with a 6 footer that he drained after two clutch shots on Richmond’s 18th hole par 5.
