MTC NORTHVIEW OPEN
Northview - Ridge Golf Course
Sunday, April 25th, 2010
After a Runner-up finish in the Championship Amateur Flight at Kings Link’s last Monday, Derek Wray continued his fine play on the Vancouver Golf Tour at the MTC NORTHVIEW OPEN with a solid round of 2-under par 70 to capture his first VGT Amateur Title this year. With the Ridge Course stretched to its max of 7,000 yards, Wray fired off 5 birdies and 3 bogeys for a three-shot victory over last week’s Amateur winner Geoff Butt. After the round, Wray (a local at Northview) commented on his play as being riddled with ups and downs. ‘I didn’t exactly strike the ball as planned’ stated Wray. ‘I’ve played Northview lots of times, but haven’t been in some of the places I was in today! It seemed that whenever I had a 30-40 footer, it went in for birdie, but for some reason I couldn’t capitalize on any of my 5-10 footers’ I guess I’m pretty happy with the overall score and the fact that it resulted in a victory, but I know I have some refining to do for the upcoming events in the VGT schedule’.
With his victory at the MTC NORTHVIEW OPEN, Wray not only collected a CLEVELAND LAUNCHER DST DRIVER and a VGT Pullover, but also vaulted himself ahead of last week’s CLEVELAND/SRIXON ORDER OF MERIT (OOM) leader Adam Cornelson. In the four VGT events he’s played in 2010, Wray has been a measure of consistency, finishing 2nd, t3rd, 2nd and 1st and holding a stroke average of 72.25. Cornelson and Butt have also been very solid this year, posting stroke averages of 72.75 and 71.0 respectively to hold 2nd and 3rd place on the Championship Flight CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit.
In Flight A action, Vancouver Golf Club’s Jim Falconer fired off four birdies en-route to a solid round of 75 and a 2-shot victory over 2nd place finishers Jesse Forster and Raj Singh. Falconer took home a nice bit of hardware for his play, winning a Cleveland Launcher Hybrid iron and a $100 Northview Gift Card. After five events, David Grabowski holds the lead in the Flight A CLEVELAND/SRIXON OOM with 3,100 points with Jesse Forster and Masa Takahashi narrowing the gap.
In the Flight B Division, McCleery’s Steven McIntosh took Low Gross honours with a score of 84 to win a Cleveland Bag and $100 Northview Gift Card. A single shot behind were Vancouver’s Hector Aguilar and North Vancouver’s Aaron Tham with gross scores of 85. After 5 events, Dave Woodsford maintains his lead in the Flight B CLEVELAND/SRIXON OOM with 3,100 points with Tham closing the gap to less than 700 points after playing only 2 events.
