3RD ANNUAL
BRAD GARSIDE/PAINE EDMONDS OPEN
March 15th, 2010
Point Roberts Golf & C.C.
In VGT's Opening 2010 event that boasted 19 past and present Canadian Tour members, Hazelmere's Phil Jonas put together a stellar round of 67 (-5) to oust 2009 VGT Order of Merit Champion Bryn Parry by two shots. Both Jonas and Parry made the turn at 4-under par, but it was Jonas' steady play on the back nine that gave him the victory and vaulted him into an early lead in VGT'S 2010 CLEVELAND/SRIXON ORDER OF MERIT with 1,500 points. Jonas took home $1,400 for his fine play and Parry $1,000 for his runner-up finish. Parry was quoted as saying he gave a handful of shots away on the course. A costly 3-putt from 3 feet on #3 spurred Parry on to go 5-under his next four holes. However, a costly double-bogey on the par-5 #13th from the middle of the fairway de-railed his chances to win.
2009 Montreal Open Champion Stuart Anderson rounded out a three-way tie for 3rd, shooting 70 (-2), each collecting $658.33 for the good play. Anderson may find himself tee-ing-it up in a few more VGT events this year during a 3-week gap in the Canadian Tour schedule come June.
In the Amateur Championship side of the tournament, Fraserview's Andrew Henning outplayed Northview's Derek Wray in a two-hole playoff with a birdie on the second extra hole. Both players fired rounds of 76 (+4) on the day. Hennings won a Cleveland Launcher DST hybrid and a $100 Marketplace IGA gift card.
In Flight A action, Pitt Meadow Golf Club member David Grabowski too Low honours with a score of 81 to win a Cleveland Bag and Marketplace IGA Gift Card. Overall Low Gross winner in Flight B went to Northland's Rob Colquhoun, also taking home a Cleveland Bag and Marketplace gift card. Amateur players in VGT events were also playing for valuable Order of Merit points for their top showings that accumulate throughout the year and culminate in an Overall Champion for each amateur flight.
Tournament sponsor Brad Garside was on hand to take in the action and himself posted a good round of golf. A five-year sponsor of VGT since its inception in 2006, Garside has enjoyed playing a part in VGT's player and tournament development. "The VGT has definitely evolved over the past 5 years. I remember playing at Point Roberts in one of the events 2-3 years ago. The organization and the look of the events are so much better now". "There is a real look of a PGA Tour Event now - the signage, first-tee starter, rules official and Live Scoring on the big screens on-course. It runs smoothly and I know how hard Fraser, Heidi and their cast of loyal volunteers work to make it look so smooth! I look forward to our involvement with VGT throughout the year, especially with our role at the Vancouver Open this September".
"We look forward to continuing our relationship with Brad and the Paine Edmonds Law Firm as we continue to develop our tour in the future", stated VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland. "I too am looking forward to an exciting 2010 Vancouver Open with Paine Edmonds signing on as the Presenting Sponsor of the event this year! Paine Edmonds sponsorship will ensure that the Vancouver Open will pay-out its largest purse on the VGT Tour Schedule for 2010" |
