Congratulations to VGT Professionals Clark MacPherson and Ryan Williams for advancing through to final stage of US Open qualifying today. Both VGT members qualified today at Bermuda Dunes Golf Club in Palm Desert, California, vying for only 6 qualifying spots thru to the final stage.

MacPherson fired the 2nd low round of the day, shooting 69 and (RW) Williams shot a 1-under par 71 which was good enough for a t4 finish, also advancing through.

Macpherson, a Surrey resident and Cleveland/Srixon team player will be qualifying at the Emerald Valley golf club in creswell Oregon on June 4th. To find out more about Clark MacPherson you can visit his personal website here: http://www.clarkmacphersongolf.com.

Williams, also heralding from Surrey, and representing both Cleveland/Srixon and the West Coast Golf Group, will be taking his game down to Lake Merced Golf Club in San Francisco on June 4th. To find out more about Ryan Williams and his up and coming schedule, please visit his personal website here: http://ryanwilliamsgolf.com.

“We’re all very proud of Ryan and Clark, and wish them a hugely successful campaign to gain entrance to the 2012 U.S. Open” stated VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland. “Both Ryan and Clark are tremendous golfers, and I am not surprised to see them advance to final stage of qualifying with how they have been playing the last couple of years. On behalf of our whole team at Vancouver Golf Tour, I want to wish Ryan and Clark all the very best with their next qualifying stage, and let them know that the thousands of followers of VGT are all behind them cheering them on at their next stage. We look forward to watching them in their journey to gain entrance to the PGA Tour’s 2nd major of the year to be held June 14-17th at the Olympic Club in San Francisco this year”.

Best regards,

The District of West Vancouver, Golf West Vancouver and the Vancouver Golf Tour (VGT) are pleased to announce the ten players who will be competing in the VGT Golf West Vancouver Shootout on Wednesday May 16 at Gleneagles Golf Club:

Bryn Parry, North Vancouver -Winner 2011 Rogers Canada Cup

Ryan Williams, Vancouver -Winner 2011 West Coast Golf Group Pro-Am

Jeremy Paradis, Langley -Two 2nd places finishes on 2011 VGT

Brett Webster, Abbotsford -Rookie of the Year 2011 VGT

James Presnail -Head Professional Gleneagles Golf Course

Fraser Mulholland -commissioner VGT

Alex Jardine -Low Score open qualifying at Gleneagles (1 under par, 34)

“We are looking forward to a great day and some great golf at Gleneagles Golf Course. This will be an opportunity for the residents of our community to come out and see VGT’s best Professionals play in a fun and entertaining format,” stated Dan Henegar, manager of Parks, Arboriculture and Horticulture for the District of West Vancouver.

All 10 players begin play on the first tee as one large group. In this format one player will be eliminated on each hole until a winner remains. The player with the highest score on each hole is eliminated. If the high score is a tie between two or more players, there will be a pre-designated tie-breaking chip, pitch or putt off area. The player in the tiebreaker furthest from the hole will be eliminated. Only two players will be left by the 9th hole, which will determine the Champion. The purse for the event is $1,750 with winner taking home $1,000.

“Gleneagles is going to provide a very good test for the VGT’s Professionals,” said Fraser Mulholland, Commissioner of the Vancouver Golf Tour. “The players are already talking about this format and I think we’ll see a lot of birdies from this talented group of players,” added Mulholland.

The day begins on the first hole at 3:30 p.m. with a 45-minute clinic put on by some of the VGT Professionals. The ten players tee off starting at 4:30 p.m. off the first tee. The event is open to spectators and is free to attend

TOURNAMENT REVIEW

Thirty year old Matt Makinson is having quite a year on the VGT this year, so far with a 1st (BC Match Play Team) 2nd (Nickel Heating Open) and a 3rd (Sandpiper) place finish leading up to the VGT Quilchena Open. So when he rattled off 9 birdies and a solo bogey at the event, it surprised no-one in the field, particularly with the golf course playing in immaculate shape from tee-to-green.

Fraser Mulholland (L) presents Matt Makinson (R) a Cheque for win at Quilchena Open

Makinson came off a strong year on the VGT in 2010, winning the dubious distinction of the ‘Paine Edmonds’ most improved player award, before heading off to gain status on the Canadian Tour that fall. He returned to the VGT in 2011 with flying colours, winning the opening event at Morgan Creek, making believers of all locals that Makinson was ready to shine out on the Canadian Tour. However, a wrist injury plagued Makinson from the early part of the Can Tour season, keeping him out of the line-up on the VGT and the Canadian Tour much past June. With his injury, Makinson is able to claim a medical exemption for the 2012 Canadian Tour season, giving him a second chance to play the tour. And the way he is swinging the club the past 3 months, there is a local camp here believing that he will be a contender on the Canadian Tour on multiple occasions.

Makinson will make his first appearance on the Can Tour at Uplands Golf Club on June 8-11th at the Times Colonist Victoria Open. But he’ll have a couple more ‘warm-up’ events on the VGT, notably the VGT – Golf West Vancouver Shoot-out on Wednesday, May 16th, and the Golf House Traditions Classic Pro-am presented by Haywood Securities on May 28th at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club.

Makinson will be joined this Wednesday by 4 time CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit winner Bryn Parry, who just so happens to be leading the OOM again this year. Parry finished 2nd solo at Quilchena with a round of 66 and two shots behind Makinson, who picked up $1,000 for his win!

LOCAL CELEBRITIES IN ATTENDANCE

In what was one of VGT’s biggest events in 2012, with 108 golfers in the mix, VGT was honoured to have a few local celebrities join in on the Amateur competition. Noted celebrities included Global BC’s Sports personality ‘Double Jay’ Janower, CKNW’s Sports Weekend host Dave Sheldon, and two of BC Lion’s finest Geroy Simon and Michael Reilly! At the end of the day we were privy to a few gratuitous shots with Geroy and Michael, who posed with some fabulous customised BC Lions golf bags courtesy of Brad German of G&G (Official Supplier of VGT). Thanks again to Geroy and Michael for being great sports, and to G&G for the great donation so we can raise some funds for a great cause at the Vancouver Open Charity Pro-am!!

AMATEUR RESULTS

With a total of 76 amateurs in the field, some great scores were shot in each flight.. Here are your Amateur Gross Winners in each flight:

Championship: Yves Bisson – 74 (+1)
Flight A: Murray Reed – 78 (+5)
Flight B: Alex Duran – 79 (+6)
For Full Event Scores in Professional and Amateur Divisions, CLICK HERE!

On behalf of all of us with the Vancouver Golf Tour, we can’t thank Quilchena Golf & Country Club enough for hosting our event last Thursday, and for conditioning the golf course in tour quality conditions for our players. I have had a tremendous amount of positive feedback from the players about the condition of the golf course and we are very grateful to you, the entire staff and to your membership for giving up your golf course for the afternoon to host our Championship.

Thanks again for the continued support of our tour, its players and helping us with our vision of seeing many more Canadians on the PGA Tour!!! We will continue to spread the word for golfers to think Quilchena Golf & C.C. when they are making their decision to host an event or join membership in one of BC’s most premier golf facilities.

“I’m really excited to announce that YYOUNG WATER CO. has joined the team of growing partners of the VGT” states VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland. “Having multiple water stations on course at the 20+ events on the VGT allows the growing number of golfers on the VGT to stay hydrated as they play on course, many of whom are aspiring to reach the PGA Tour. YYOUNG not only gives us the chance to help prepare our golfers, they are also allowing us to do our part in a greener way to re-hydrate our golfers with their Alkaline water coolers and pump stations without handing out excess water bottles to our members.

“I can’t think of a better partner to have (in YYOUNG WATER) CO. considering the quality of (YYOUNG) water our players are being offered on course” states Mulholland. “Their partnership has allowed us to reduce our carbon footprint by eliminating thousands of plastic bottles that could find their way into the landfill unnecessarily if we were to distribute bottled water throughout the year! YYOUNG WATER CO. is allowing us to offer our players a healthy, environmentally friendly approach to keeping our golfers fresh on the course and perform at optimal levels!”

“We are very proud to be affiliated with the Vancouver Golf Tour, and excited to be a part of the process when it comes to assisting golfers with their every day needs of hydration while working their way to the PGA Tour” stated Helen Young, Marketing Director YYOUNG WATER CO. “YYOUNG WATER uses an eight-step purification process known as the “8ZONE+” and alkalization, making our water some of the purest water on the market. Our water consists of a PH of 8.5 or greater, allowing athletes to stay hydrated, rejuvenating their body for a process of natural healing. A balanced PH level within our bodies can result in weight loss and increased stamina. Not to mention we have the option of BPA free bottles to cater to those who prefer to use them instead of the PC #7 bottles”.

Through their Partnership, YYOUNG WATER CO. will provide Vancouver Golf Tour members a special promotional offer of their delivery service providing a 6 month free cooler rental, 1 free 5 gallon alkaline bottle of water with a minimum of 5 bottles ordered for any new customers from VGT. VGT Members are asked to contact Helen Young and to quote their membership username when placing an order.

“One of YYOUNG’S priorities is……… “We are committed to supporting and educating health and wellness. Staying active and being aware on ways to better an individual’s lifestyle. Look Young…Think Young…Drink YYOUNG Water!

TOURNAMENT REVIEW

Forty-year old North Vancouver Professional Bryn Parry was up to his regular self again on the Vancouver Golf Tour yesterday, carding a flawless round of 5-under par 67 on a stretched out Royalwood Links course measuring over 7,000 yards. Parry used his veteran like experience to card five birdies and not a single bogey on the day on his way to a 2-shot victory over Canadian Tour Pro James Allenby who heralds out of Royalwood himself! Allenby’s card was a bit more adventurous, as his card was dotted 6 times with birdies on 2,6,10,14,15 and 17, but traded off bogeys on 3,4 and 11 to shoot 69 on the day. Parry too home $1,000 and Allenby a cheque for $725, and both earned valuable points on the 2012 CLEVELAND/SRIXON ORDER OF MERIT. Parry vaulted his way back to the #1 spot over last week’s winner John Shin, who carded a decent round of 72, for a t7th place.

Bryn Parry (left) Wins 2012 Royalwood Classic seen here with Fraser Mulholland

For the 2nd straight VGT event, Vancouver Golf Club Amateur Brendan Dillon took low honours in the Amateur Division, carding a very nice round of 2-under par 70. Being paired up with two professionals on the day, Dillon showed his playing partners he could compete with some of the top Professionals in our region. After an opening bogey on the challenging par four 1st hole, Dillon rattled off 4 birdies before making his only other bogey on the 16th hole and ultimately win the Amateur flight by 4 shots over Mission GC’s Stu Dunaway and Pitt Meadows’ GC amateur Connor O’Dell. Dillon took home a Cleveland 588 Zip Groove Wedge and a $100 Marketplace IGA gift card for his play and edged himself into 2nd spot on the Amateur Order of Merit, 433 points behind O’Dell.

A grouping of 3 Canadian Tour pros (Ryan Williams, Adam Cornelson & Darren Griff) and recent addition to the Northview GC Pro Staff, Keith Martin finished t4th with rounds of 71, each wining $468.75. A total of 62 golfers were in the field on the day, including 45 players in the Professional or Championship Amateur field.

Although the field size was relatively smaller this week, Flight B Order of merit leader Kevin Griffin dialed in his 3rd victory in 6 starts, carding a gross score of 79, good for a 2-shot win over his next challengers Murray Reed and Ian Jarvis. In Flight B, Peter Jones had a great day of his own, carding a gross score of 81 to claim Low Honors on the day. But it was CLEVELAND/SRIXON Flight B leader Robert Parihar who came to play again, shooting a net 68, re-asserting himself at the top of the order of merit with over 4,700 points and now over 800 points ahead of his next competitor Alex Duran!

All KP winners were awarded some fancy new FENIX GOLF apparel for their great shots on the day. This included Professional Brad Clapp, Championship Flight – Connor O’Dell, Flight A – Ian Jarvis and Flight B – Raj Gill. The closest shot on the day was Brad Clapp, who earned himself a spot into the JOHNSTON MEIER INSURANCE $1MILLION SHOOT-OUT on Aug.29th at the Vancouver Open Pro-am!!! Although there were some great shots, the $5,000 Hole-in-one that was up for grabs was not won this week!!!

Today’s event was VGT’s sixth stroke play event out of the 24 events on the 2012 VGT calendar! The top 2 Professionals will win some fantastic prizes, including a $5,000 PGA Tour Q-School Entry for 1st and a $2,500 European Tour School Entry for 2nd Professional. Top Amateurs in each flight will be vying for over $1,000 in prizes and Marketplace IGA gift cards in each flight!!!
