2010 Green Room Open
Squamish Valley Golf & Country Club
June 21st, 2010
Littered his card with 9 birdies on the day, Canadian Tour Pro Matt Daniel charged his way into the first official day of summer with his first victory on the 2010 VGT schedule. Daniel's course record round of 65 topped the field of 81 players including 35 Professionals in the field and took home $1,050 for the day.
Daniel's two shot victory over fellow Canadian Tour Professional Oliver Tubb earned him 1,500 points on the season long CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit, shooting him up to 6th place overall. Seymour Creek's Bryn Parry shared 3rd place honours with Shaughnessy Professional Lindsay Bernakevitch, good for 850 pts, building on his lead on the CLEVELAND/SRIXON Order of Merit over Canadian Tour Professional Stuart Anderson.
After perfect scoring conditions on the front nine, including what would be touted by Bryn Parry as 'THE BEST conditions we have played this year', Squamish Valley's back nine held up its own. Windy conditions prevailed, making already lightening fast greens even more difficult to hold as they firmed up throughout the afternoon. Hats off to Squamish Valley's greens crew for setting up the course in fantastic shape for the event the whole day!
In the Championship Amateur Division, Richmond Country Club's David Cao handled the tough scoring conditions like a pro firing a very solid round of 72 to beat his next competitor in the field of 46 amateurs by 5 shots.
Cao's win at Squamish was his second victory out of three events on the VGT Amateur schedule this year. He slowly marches his way up the CLEVELAND/SRIXON Amateur Order of Merit into 6th place with 3850 points, which is lead by 'iron-man' Derek Wray with 6,733 points after 8 events.
The three way tie for second went to Derek Wray, Joey Lemieux and Bryan Stretch with rounds of 77.
In Flight A, North Vancouver's Michael Woods claimed the Low Gross title shooting a very respectable score of 81, edging out fellow golfer Jim Zalusky in RCGA retrogression. Hats off to Green Room's Matt Carrothers for his continued coaching efforts with both Michael and Jim. Their lesson programs are obviously paying off! The Low net winner in Flight A went to Rob Colquhoun with a net score of 72.
Flight B's Amateur field was led by Hector Aguilar with a Gross Score of 81. This was Hector's second victory of the year on the VGT, and assures him of graduating up to the Flight A Division with his win. Low net honours went to Jason Boyd who shot his personal best round at Squamish with a net score of 67! Great going guys!
Flight A's Order of Merit is closely contested with David Grabowski hanging onto the lead, followed closely by Masa Takahashi and Jim Zalusky. Flight B's Order of Merit is lead by Hector Aguilar, closely followed by Jason Boyd.
